You are welcome to attend Mass without being Catholic, without being baptised, and without having made up your mind about anything.
What Catholics believe is happening
Catholics believe the Mass is not a re-enactment or a memorial service. They believe it is the same sacrifice of Christ on the cross, made present again — and that the bread and wine become his body and blood.
You do not have to believe that to be in the room. But it explains almost everything you will see: the silence, the kneeling, the care taken with small objects, the seriousness.
About Communion
Only Catholics who are prepared to receive go up to Communion. If you are not Catholic, you simply stay in your seat. This is expected and is not a judgement on you.
If you want to know more
- Most churches have a priest available after Mass. You can say, plainly, that you are not Catholic and are looking into it.
- Many parishes run a course for adults who want to understand the faith, usually beginning in the autumn.
- Nobody will pressure you. Becoming Catholic takes as long as it takes.
